Good oral health involves more than just brushing. To keep your teeth and mouth healthy one should follow some steps in routine. Good oral hygiene results in a mouth that looks and smells healthy. Healthy teeth not only enable you to look and feel good, they make it possible to eat and speak properly. It is important for your overall well being .

There are some simple steps which reduce the risk of dental problems.

  • Brushing thoroughly twice a day
  • Brushing outside inside and chewing surface of each tooth
  • Floss daily
  • Floss is a thread like structure to clean the areas between two teeth. This area is not cleaned by brush properly so floss is used
  • Brush lightly – Don’t put pressure on the teeth. Brushing too hard can damage your teeth
  • Brush for two minutes
  • Always use a tooth brush with soft and extra soft bristles as your doctor recommends
  • Change your tooth brush regularly
  • Use toothpaste as your doctor recommends. Most toothpaste contains fluoride which has anti caries properties
  • Visit your dentist every six months. For check up and cleaning of teeth
  • Children should visit the doctors regularly from early age
  • Quit tobacco if using
  • Eat healthy food, avoid snacks etc or high sugar products

There are other methods to supplement brushing and flossing that include Mouth washes, Inter dental brushes, Oral irrigators etc.
